Floppy drive won't enable

B

Budd

"A:\" drive won't activate or show in My Computer.
Device Manager shows it red x'ede out and I'm unable to enable "Standard
floppy disk controller".
Properties show:
"This device is disabled (Code 22).
Click "Enable Drive" to enable device.
Device unsafe. "Do not use this device in any hardware profiles(disable)."

Deleting the floppy disk controller and rebooting to reload the controller
gives a note that it couldn't find a file(?).

I'm trying to avoid formating and reloading Win2k, so any good advice would
be welcomed.

The other alternative here is that the floppy controller is going bad or
your drive/ cable is dead.

Finally make sure that the floppy is enabled in the BIOS and that you have
the most current BIOS and motherboard drivers loaded.

Can you uninstall the floppy controller in the device manager and allow it
to recreate on next boot. Bottom line, this isn't the end of the world. I
mean, most computers don't ship with floppy drives anymore anyway.

I have removed controler and reinstalled it.

I've checked BIOS and oddly enough only the floppy and HDD config is not
configurable.

I think I'll wait a bit and reinstall Win2k some time in the future.

Thanks all. I was hoping someone would have something like a virus or worm
problem answer.

Nothing wrong with the hardware as it works in DOS(forgot to mention this).
I ended up using the boot disk set and repairing Win2k.
A few things have to be installed again(hardware drivers), but I have the
floppy working. I use it still.
