Floppy drive will not work

I have an ASPIRE Laptop, with Windows XP, the problem is that when i
insert a floppy disc into the drive and click start, run, "A:" it will
not open it although the light on the front flashes, But i can read it
if i open it through My Computer, or with Word.
Please can anyone help me in finding out how to open it through the
usual start menu
