Floppy drive not recognized

I am running WindowsXP Home and all of a sudden I can't get the A (floppy)
drive to be recognized. I went into settings and made sure the floppy drive
was "enabled." Any other ideas? Thanks in advance

This sounds like the same problem I described yesterday in the thread
"Shortcut to floppy works on desktop but not on taskbar", copied below. It
is good to hear that this problem is in the crosshairs of the folks at
Microsoft:

When I create a shortcut to "3½ Floppy" from the icon in "My computer", the
shortcut works fine on the desktop. If I move the shortcut to the Taskbar
it works for whatever floppy was in the floppy drive when the shortcut was
made (if any), but for the next floppy, it won't work. A message pops up,
complaining "The drive or network connection that the shortcut '3½ Floppy
(A).lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly
inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again."

It seems that the desktop and taskbar icons both point to the same (proper)
location; examining the Properties of the taskbar shortcut reveals:
Target: A:\
as it should; the same appears as the target for the desktop shortcut.

Doing the same operations to make shortcuts to the CD drive works properly
on both the desktop and the taskbar.

Why does the shortcut on the taskbar work only for the first floppy? Is
this a bug or a feature? Are there workarounds more elegant than using the
shortcut to the floppy only from the desktop?

I had the same problem a few weeks ago, checked BIOS -

OK,Changed power connection(4 Pin plug),changed IDE lead,
no good. Bought a new Floppy drive, Cured. I can only
assume there must be a fuse (or similar) that had gone.
