Flat panel displays: Built in speakers or not?

If one is in market for a LCD flat display..... is it a good idea to
get one that does NOT have built in speakers? Or is getting built in
speakers a desirable thing?

What would you do?

My gut feeling is to NOt get built in speakers and use external
speakers..... just to reduce murphys law a bit

Also....any advice on a good "value" in 17 LCD displays?

Sound quality on the monitor speakers is never stellar. If you are
concerned about sound quality, you have to get good speakers.

OTOH, if you don't care about sound quality and you want to free up more
space on your desk, then, sure, built-in speakers will save space and
energy.

I will stick with external speakers because I like to listen to music,
TV, and movies on my PC. I've got a subwoofer and ~everything~.

<IMHO>Get a name-brand one with a serious warranty. IMHO you should buy
it locally if you can, in case you have to swap because of bad pixels.
That way you can see what you are buying before you shell out.</IMHO>

A good 17" can cost between 350.00 to 600.00 and beyond. Shop around,
because you can get rebates and such.

I have an Aopen 17" LCD monitor with built in speakers. You can hardly
hear the sound at all, and I have not found any way to improve the sound in
Windows. Unless the monitor comes with software to allow control of sound,
I would pass.
