I am getting this rather annoying web page that pops up
whenever I cannot find a web site. It is from
www.flashlightsearch.com/search4u.html.

How did this come about and how do I get rid of it?

Try AdAware, from http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Or SpyBox, from http://spybot.eon.net.au/

They detect many "intruders" and give the user the option to remove them.
