flashing hour glass in XP won't go away

When using XP I have something new going on. My mouse pointer is supposed to
be a white arrow. It now is a white arrow with an hour-glass that flashed on
and off. It stays on for about 4 sec. then off for 1 second. Seems to me
that some activity is going on with the HD or something. Nothing ever loads
just the flashing on an off of the hour-glass beside the pointer (white
arrow) Any ideas please.

Make sure your antivirus software is up to date and scan your system. Also,
download, install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com.

If you are unable to do this from the XP desktop because this activity gets
in the way, try from Safe Mode. Boot the system, start tapping F8, when the
menu appears, select Safe Mode, press enter, decline the option to go to
System Restore, when in Safe Mode perform the above functions.
