Flash or Macromedia Problems

Hello,

I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2.

Ever since I have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2,
all or some of the flash content on websites crashes the
browser. I did a bit of testing on this as well.

I reinstalled the system, and did't add SP2, and the
sites worked fine. I continued to install SP2 and
returned to these sites and it once again crashed the
browser. This was on a clean install.

The worst part it, when I go to a website that I built
for a client, it's showing the flash upside down, and
reversed. Once you touch it, or scroll with it, it locks
up the browser, and then reports that there is an error
in the Active X plug-in. I went to Macromedia and
install the latest flash play they had, and it continues
to do the same thing.

Anyone else have this problem with Flash content?!?!?

Hi Tom

It could be related to the popup blocker in SP2, as part of their new
security, as well as they no longer support JavaScript. Try the following
and see if it helps:

The popup blocker installed with SP2 is simple to turn on and off and is
turned on by default. It shows up down in the status bar of IE and a simple
right click gives you the option to enable/disable the blocker. One nice
feature is that you can enable/disable popups for certain sites rather than
just arbitrarily enable or disable them for all sites. See:

Be aware, however, that after Dec 31, 2007, MS will apparently no longer be
distributing Java or providing any support for Java including security
fixes. See here: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/ so you might want
to start thinking about the future.

For the MS Java VM, you may need to install v.3805 or v.3809 prior to
upgrading to v. 3810 if you didn't previously have MS Java v. 3805 or 3809
installed.

If your OS is Win2000 SP2, SP3 but NOT SP4 then you can download and install
MS Java VM v. 3809 from here:

For Win2kSP4, to get 3810 from Microsoft you now have to get Q816093 from

be the only Win2k option that has it) and then find 816093 in the list. You

The following procedure has also been reported to work for Win2kSP4 by Saybo
at
"I always try to install the 3805 package 1st. Most of the time that does
not work, so I then have them download the 3810 package, open it in WinZip
and extract msjava.dll and vmhelper.dll to the system32 folder. Then run
the 3810 install. This has had a 100% success rate for the last couple of
months."

All the feedback I've had about using this approach for the SP4 case has
been favorable, so far.

Both Java VM's can co-exist on your machine quite nicely. Just select which
one you want to use in Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and restart all IE
browsers. Here, courtesy of Mitch Gallant, MVP Security, is a tiny utility
which allows you to toggle and view status of your current Java VM vendor
associated with IE:

A note from Mitch Gallant:

"One note about the JVM Selector utility: If/when you install a new
version of Sun J2SE, you need to manually select to have Sun JVM as default
JVM for IE (in install), or after install via the JavaPlugin control panel.
This generates the necessary win32 registry entries, which must be present
for the utility to know about JavaPlugin. After that, the utility should
work properly."

I'm having different problems with Flash. Cannot download/install a plug-in
for my Flash Player. I visit Macromedia's site, click, and after 10 seconds
the DL hangs with "one item remaining..." and that item is
"...mmcom/flash.html." Cannot see Flash content on any Web sites, which is a
bummer because I'm pitching a client on redoing its Web site (I'm the writer
and the Web designer has a Flash-built site.) But, if I go to
C/windows/downloaded program files, I see a file "installed" and described
as: Macromedia Flash Player 7.0 r19. Grrrr.

Hi Joe

If you also have SP2 you might try the following and see if it helps

Enable Flash in SP2

Internet Options> Advanced> Security> Check "Allow active content to run in
files on My Computer"

You will, of course, be giving up some of the security provided by SP2.

You can also make My Computer visible in Internet Options> Security to allow
additional tweaking.

Flash & Shockwave not working

A few of things could contribute to the problem. Have you checked your
firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to on or block?
Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will block Flash unless you
turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it would not open Flash at all, and
it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I unchecked the
Kill Flash it stopped. Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see
them as ads or and kill it any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash (4X
5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer

Remove Flash, including all registry entries for it. Reboot then go to
Macromedia's site. Since it is Flash based you should get the dialog to
