fixed problem accessing network storage

Problem accessing shared folders on my Buffalo LinkStation mini NAS seems to
have been fixed by resetting MTU.

I pinged it with a number of MTU settings - the default value of 1500 didn't
work - 1400 did work so by trial and error ended up seting it at 1467 and
everything seems to be fine.

You have to be careful about this. The new MTU might improve the LAN
connection to the NAS but can impede the "Speed" of the Internet connection.
I would set the MTU according to the Internet connection and try to increase
the RCwin.

Thanks for that advice. I tried that tool on my own computer (still running
XP) and it immediately showed me that my MTU was set very low - though
increasing it didn't change much, broadband speed still just over 14000. On
the Vista computer the problem was that it wouldn't really connect to the NAS
at all with MTU set at 1500. I will fiddle with it a bit more but am
relatively happy that access to the NAS is reliable and quick (except at
startup the computer says it can't reconnect which seems to have more to do
with the order things start up - so it tries to connect to the network drives
before the wireless connection is properly established) and the Vista PC is
getting a broadband speed of over 10000 on a wireless (as opposed to Ethernet
cable) connection.

That's good enough.

Common issue.

The best solution is to do the connects using a .bat file with net use
commands that you fire on a delay. There are a few free utilities out
there that will run a program at logon at whatever delay you want.
