Fix for Microsoft Outlook Send/Receive Error while using Zone Alarm

This workaround applies to Microsoft Outlook 2003. I have not tested it
on any other version of Outlook.

In my case, I found that after I upgraded Zone Alarm to the most recent
version it rendered Outlook's Send/Receive useless for certain email
accounts. To get around this, I found that iSafe.exe was the problem.
While iSafe.exe was running, the Send/Receive error occurred.

To fix this, end the iSafe.exe process. For more on what iSafe.exe is,
you can google it. For now, just know that this is the culprit. You can
end the process by ending the process in Task Manager. To get there,
right-click on your taskbar then choose Task Manager. Click on Process
tab then sort by Image Name to make the list manageable. End the
iSafe.exe process.

Perform a Send/Receive (no need to restart Outlook) and it should work.

Best of luck & hope this helps someone,

Mike

Or, if you trust iSafe, add it to Zone Alarm's exceptions list.

Can't you just disable Mail Safe in ZAP and automatic email scanning
in your AV? I disable both, and have never had a problem.

Brian,

I invite you to be open to the possibility that I had already done that
and searched for "exception" but didn't find one instance of it in the
help file. I found "except" quite a bit, but no "exception list" as you
speak of. Are you sure you have the right terminology?

Also, be open to the possibility that I know how to use Zone Alarm well
enough to keep my computer protected. I am not a novice user. ZA is not
that difficult to use. However, this iSafe.exe/Outlook problem is very
widespread, as I am sure you would agree if you read the ZoneLabs
forums.

So is there anyone else out there who can simply tell me how to add
this program to an exception list? The thing I saw I could do was
create an expert rule for it, which I did... but it didn't solve the
problem. So until then, killing the iSafe.exe process works just fine
for me.

Sincerely,

Mike

No such luck. I've tried that, but the iSafe.exe continues to load at
startup and prevents Outlook from performing a Send/Receive.

Additionally, it is worth noting that this only happens to two email
accounts, both POP3 servers. My other two accounts, a POP3 and an IMAP,
are unaffected.

Open the Programs tab in ZA and add the program there.

Then there's no excuse for you not knowing how to add a program to ZA's
exception list.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the reply. If that's what you mean by Exception List, then
yes, I have an intimate knowledge of that tab and how it works. I
agree, there is no excuse for not knowing how to add a program to the
Programs Control list.

That said, Microsoft Outlook has been in this list from Day One. I
currently have Outlook's entry set to:

SmartDefense: Custom
Trust Level: Super
Access: Trusted (Y) Server (Y)
Server: Trusted (?) Server (?)
Send Mail: Yes

This is my main point and why I originally started this thread. Upon a
recent update to ZA, Outlook no longer performs a successful
send/receive on two of my four email accounts. When I researched this
problem to seek out a solution, I noticed that many people were having
this very same problem after a recent update of ZA.

All I'm saying is that killing the iSafe.exe process has worked for me,
and is a temporary solution until I find out why this is happening and
what settings can be changed in Zone Alarm to stop it.

Best regards,

Michael
