Fix for duplicate desktop items?

A

Alan

Whenever I add a new item to my desktop then refresh the
screen, the item duplicates itself once. The item can be a
shortcut, file, folder - essentially anything. Both
instances of the item have the same Properties and
clicking on either will have the desired result. If I
select one instance of the item and delete it, it goes to
the ReBin and the other stays, but now when I hit refresh,
the remaining instance vanishes. If I change the name on
one instance, it changes the name on the other as well.
When looking at the Desktop folder with My Computer or
Explorer, there is only one instance listed.

Some more background on the problem, if needed or
interested: My system had an Administrator (me) and a
single Power User (me, different name/pw), and was hooked
up to a domain-based network and had an assigned IP
address. Following disconnection from that network
(performed by the LAN manager), relocation to another
state, and connection to a new network, I had a number of
problems with permissions when logging in as the Power
User. As an Admin, I moved all of the desktop, document,
and application information from the Power User to the
Admin folder, created another Power User, then moved
everything into that new folder. When I did this,
everything on the desktop doubled immediately and the
problem started. The duplication happens when logged in as
Admin or Power User, and there are no obvious problems
with multiple Desktop folders (e.g. duplicate Desktop
folders in All Users, Default Users, and Admin or Power
User folders).

Right-click on start - explore and drag and drop stuff your "your account's"
desktop
try it with the "All Users: desktop

"" As an Admin, I moved all of the desktop, document,
It sounds like you copied SHORTCUTS, and so when you create one, you also
display the shortcut to it.
Create something "text.txt" on your desktop and then right-click -
properties on both icons

Still bugging you :
MOVE (do not COPY) any documents, "good shortcuts" on your desktop now to a
folder.
Create another user and MOVE the other stuff from the folder back to the
new desktop.
Then delete these "bad user" accounts
