fitting a dvd writer IDE cable question.

Dumb question but have to ask it.

Just got a dvd drive and need to hook it up with a double connection IDE
cable along with cd writer. Going to make the DVD master and the CD slave,
but not sure where on the cable they should go. Does the DVD go to the
middle connector on the cable, closest to the motherboard or do I put it on
the end, or doesn't it make any difference ?.

any help appreciated.

General concensus is Slave in the middle, Master on the end.
I`ve fitted them the other way round, and they`ve still worked.

No difference, except perhaps if you're using an 80 pin connector instead of
the 40. If 80 I've read that the master should be on the end if it's a hdd,
but don't hold me to that.

LOL no difference ? I'm glad your not messing inside my systems

The end connector is and always has been the master device, of cours
the middle connector is for the slave device

Device jumper settings placed accordingly

Although consider making the drive used more often the master

Just make sure the bios sees them and all should be good to go, i
your in need of a copyright remover, and you will be, try googlin
DVD43free, works a treat

As I understand it (could be wrong!)

for 80cable wires it doesnt matter as long as you are setting master and
slave manually. If using Cable Select then the bios? will make the end one
the master. I think 'Master at the end' is a hangover from the 40cable
days when you put a single drive at the end to avoid reflections on the
cable? Thats why there is a tendancy for people to say 'Master at the end'
and for some cables to be labled this way...

Putting a single drive at the end of the cable is still
a good idea. And this site will save me a lot of typing :)
