first screen

When I start WindowsXP Pro SP2, and the first screen appears, the B/W one
that has the option to Start up in Safe Mode, the full text on this screen
does display all the text, the first 1½ characters of the text is hidden.
I can’t amend it using my 'ViewSonic 19" ' monitor's front panel sizing
options.
Can this be fixed so that all the text is visible.

When your computer is fully booted up, you are probably using your monitor
in a high-rez mode, and you probably widened the general screen display to
take advantage of the full width of your monitor, right? The missing 1 and
1/2 characters at the "first" screen when you turn on the computer is a
consequence of having stretched the the width of the display. The width
control of your monitor is a global setting.

As I use QBasic a lot I had to adjust the screen to fit in all the text when
a QB program is run, but the problem was occuring before that.
I really don;t want to try to fix it as it might mess up my Qbasic program
screen.
I would still be interested to know the steps I should take if I ever tried
to fix it.

You simply have to find the "<-->" (horizontal width) setting for your
monitor and make the display a little narrower.

Uh, no. A b&w screen is NOT a normal startup screen. A b&w screen only
appears if the previous session terminated abnormally.

Most if not all TFT/LCD monitors have an auto-config button on the front
of the panel. This will adjust the screen for whatever mode you are in.
The older CRT's will just have to be lived with or fiddle with the screen
settings buttons whenever you change modes.

I dont know about your system,,,but the 1st screen is the Info from the BIOS
in B&W...then it goes straight into loading XP...in color
In between those 2 screens another B&W screen can appear that gives you the
choice of "SAFE Mode" etc etc....but only if XP was not shut down properly
or if a problem developed upon the last start up........................so
if you are getting this screen you have a problem
