does anybody know of a firewall for windows XP that can be configured
similarly to IPTables or IPChains from linux? you cant configure zone
alarm very well. i want to beable to block ports individually, in one or
both directions, on multiple or single interfaces

eg:

block tcp/137 inbound/outbound to the internet, but not to the lan

any suggestions?

TIA

The normal reply would be to use Kerio 2.15.

A more interesting idea would be to read this

http://www.analogx.com/contents/articles/ipsec.htm

It's written for win2, but should work for XP too.
