Could anyone give me advise on a personal firewall V's a
Router. Do they achive the same end I.E. Block unwanted
visitors and stop viruses etc?

I have a Broadband connection and have had no end of
trouble after installing it. Crashes while connected to
the internet and gives poor response times also. Also I
am unable to create a VPN which I need to connect to my
works WAN/LAN.

Any help would be very welcome

Kind Regards

Peter Flint.

Hi Peter,

Is your broadband Cable or DSL? If it is cable, do you
have a motorola surfboard modem? If so, is it connected
to a usb port or a network card? If connected to a usb
port, get a network card and connect it to that, the
surfboards have known problems with Windows XP machines
running pentium4 processors with Hyper Threading enabled
and will only run properly on a network card.

If you want a good firewall, don't even bother with a
software one they are useless. Yes they will block some
stuff but more then likely will cause you more problems
with your connection then solve. Get a router with a
firewall built in.
.
Hi Antony,

Thanks for the reply. I have a DSL BT Voyager modem.
If I bought a Router would I still need the modem to
connect to broadband?

Kind Regards.

Flinty.

Yes, unless you can find a router with a built in DSL modem compatible
with your DSL service.

firewall's are different from routers. routers will do some blocking if
you set them up that way.

If you have a VPN, I would recommend the Linksys BEFX41 broadband
router, 4 port switch, firewall, and VPN endpoint. really easy to setup
and has all the features you need.

Greetings --

Even good hardware firewalls (and NAT-capable routers) do nothing
to protect the user from him/herself. Again -- and I _cannot_
emphasize this enough -- almost all spyware and many Trojans and worms
are downloaded and installed deliberately (albeit unknowingly) by the
user. So a software firewall, such as Sygate or ZoneAlarm, that can
detect and warn the user of unauthorized out-going traffic is an
important element of protecting one's privacy and security. Most
antivirus applications do not scan for or protect you from
adware/spyware, because, after all, you've installed them yourself, so
you must want them there, right?

I use both a router with NAT and Sygate Personal Firewall, even
though I generally know better than to install scumware. When it
comes to computer security and protecting my privacy, I prefer the old
"belt and suspenders" approach.
