I have been using the firewall in XP home for quite some
time. I was doing some experimenting with setting up some
shared printers, and turned it off for awhile to allow
file sharing between several PC's to download some
drivers.

I didn't turn it back on and got slammed when I went to a
shareware site and now I've got a bunch of *&%^!! adware
on my system. Problem one.

Second problem now, is that my firewall is gone. When I
go to Network connections, and open the properties tab of
my lan connection, there is no more advanced tab to get
access to turn it back on.

When I used to go to the Network connections page I used
ot have 2 groups, the network bridge which contained a
1394 connection and a lan connection. There was also a
group with just a lan connection, which is where I turned
the firewall on and off before. Now I just have the
network bridge group, and can't access the firewall
through it's lan conection.

Any advice? On either one or two. I've installed Adaware,
and Spybot search and destroy also, and have NAV
installed. I also have gone through the registry manually
looking for anything that sticks out, but can't find
anything. It's better now, but I still have pop-ups
occuring every few minutes, and none of the programs can
find the source.

Thanks in advance

Get rid of that nasty network bridge for sure!
Unless you are using it of course, which i dobut.. but
yeah get rid of it.. if you still are missing the lan
connection make sure the nic doesn't have a bang in device
manager..

other thing for the firewall it does rely on a service
You can check to make sure its running by going to start /
run and typing services.msc and looking for:

Internet Connection Sharing / Internet Connection Firewall
... I couldn't seem to find it on my pc but I guess they
changed it in SP2.. its now listed as the windows
firewall/ics so if you have sp2 look for that and make
sure its running otherwise look for the other one i
mentioned..

hope that helps,

Nate

I looked and the service wasn't running, so I started it
manually.

I then deletd the network bridge, and checked and my lan
connection now has the advanced tab back again.

I've enabled the ICF so I hopefully won't get anything
new.

Now I need to find a solution to #1.

Thanks for your help!
