I just updated a laptop to SP2. I can't enable the Windows Firewall - it
says 'some settings are controlled by group policy'.

I found a knowledge base article describing how to configure group policy
for the firewall, but the mmc snap-in for 'Group Policy Object Editor' is
not listed, so I can't configure it.

How do I fix this?

Thanks

Hi Michael,

Group Policy Editor is not available in Windows XP Home Edition. For XP Home
Edition, see "Method 1" here:

Windows Firewall options are grayed out:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/resetfwpol.htm

*And*, follw-up with a thorough malware cleanup, given the fact that there
are many viruses which disable Windows firewall via the registry.

Hi Ramesh,

I'd found a virus on the laptop earlier and successfully cleaned it (it was
called W32 something and was classed as a worm), and checked for malware.
I've followed the instructions and the firewall is now working.
Thank you very much for your help.
