Firewall?? Can you get rid of it?

I am asking for my dad. He just got Windows XP installed
a few weeks ago and cannot receive attachments. Says the
firewall is preventing it - what can he do to turn it off
or fix his receiving email attachment problem? Thank you
so much in advance!!

It seems highly unlikely that the firewall is preventing him from getting
attachments, and I would not disable the firewall.

Post more details of the problem - what mail client he's using, and what
errors - and this isn't really the best newsgroup for mail problems, so for
Outlook, try microsoft.public.outlook, and for OE, try

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.outlookexpress.mac for OE for Macintosh

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

A good website for information on OE is:

Odds are he needs to adjust his e/mail account open up
outlook and click on tools.their is an option for
attachments there.sorry I cant be of more help but I
don't use outlook. If he disables the firewall he will
most likely get a virus (Blaster comes to mind)a really
bad idea.

Thank you all very much - I will pass this on to him.
Yes, I agree disabling the firewall is not good - it's
really an email problem I'm sure. We'll figure it out!
You gave us great ideas to try. thanks to you all!!!!

Hi Deb
Don't do anything to your Firewall yet.
I'll make a guess that your problem may be the same as
mine. I'm using Outlook Express for email, and had my
attachments removed for months until ...
If you're using Outlook Express, go to Tools - Options -
Security and look for the check-box concerning
Attachments. That's what was blocking all my attachments.
If you have the time, also go to the Outlook Express
newsgroup (guess what, it's a subset under Internet
Explorer), where there're lots of people asking about the
same problem and lots of answers hinting about some sort
of security issues if you turn the protection off.
Hope this helps.
