Feeling lucky?

Firefox 2 beta is out. For all of you not familiar with the term
"beta," it is greek for "half-baked" and should be approached only
whilst one is armed with a whip.

Firefox 2 beta 1 is not yet out. The file you point to is release
candidate 1 for beta 1. There have been two release candidates for it
since then, with new bugfixes. It looks like the third one will be
released as beta 1, but there's no way to know for sure until they
release it.

Speaking of 'the third one', there's always Alpha (yeah, I know; wth am *i*
doing running an Alpha?) 3 (the only Alpha I've *ever* considered to be
_nearly_ so stable & usable as a Final release... so much-so that it has an
icon running on my Desktop). For more info, please see below (headers
paraphrased from a different group).

Portable Firefox/BonEcho 2.0 Alphas

(link at bottom of the above 'cybernetnews' page)

With (insert {or not} prefered choice of Diety here) as my witness, these
Alphas are of _near_ Release_ quality, and are *well*-nigh stable-enough
to run on an everyday (ymmv) basis. Also, I've made a list (complete with the
files themselves) of extensions which work with Portable Firefox (Bon Echo).

Extensions available (composing, at present incarnation, some 735 kb
{un-archived}) upon request.

With such an early version you'll probably break most of your extension
and themes

Only 2, even with the updated Nightly Tester Tools (v1.1; not for use with
Firefox v1.5.0.4 - this xpi-file included in "xpi pack"), failed to function
properly (so, I did not include these extensions in the pack of xpi-files).

Nightly Tester Tools (home page) -

Nightly Tester Tools, v1.0 -
http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/content/firefox/nightly/nightly-1.0.xpi

Nightly Tester Tools, v1.1 (note: this version is NOT for Firefox 1.5.0.4) -
http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/content/firefox/nightly/nightly-1.1.xpi
- - - - -

Anyone who uses Firefox sans the 'Nightly Tester Tools' extension knows
not of what they do.

Sure looks that way; better memory management/less mem. Of course, I only have
some 15 extensions installed (remember, Nightly Tester Tools v1.1 _MUST_ be
installed _first_), but still .... 2.0a3 starts up faster than ... you
know <g>.

If it's not 2.0 beta 1, why is everyone, including Mozilla, calling it
that? Look at the link you posted. firefox-2.0b1.en-
US.win32.installer.exe

Excellent question - the famous "memory hog" - up to now, never solved

Well, it's still A3, but in my recent usage, it does seem to be taking _quite_
a bit less out of the Mem.

Elaich;

It sounds like Q's right. Although naming conventions can vary among
developers, take a look at the expression just before "firefox-2.0b1."
"rc1" would indicate "release candidate #1." Putting it together,
firefox-2.0b1 is the first candidate for release /as/ their (first) beta.

There's a lot of hedging in this nomenclature but, for such a sizeable
and complex project, that's pretty much the norm in the industry.

I didn't post the link, just quoted it. They rebrand, including the
filename, when they build release candidates because they might wind
up being released. I can't answer about 'everyone', but Mozilla never
called it beta 1. They are pretty careful to call it a release
candidate whenever they mention it.

or <http://tinyurl.com/ff5yl>

For actual beta releases, they have webpages, release notes, official
announcements, &c. Beta 1 was released today.
