Finger print recognition

Hello, All!

I have posted this question in m.p.office.misc but it seems like
a good idea to give it a little wider distribution without
actual cross-posting.

I tried to find out in the Microsoft web pages but I don't find
them particularly informative.

Can the print reader substitute for the password in a protected
file? I have a number of files where I don't want people prying
but it would not be a total disaster if the information was
read.

No !

Move the file off that PC and there is NO protection.
Password protection is embedded with the file and no matter where the file is, it is
protected.

Now I might be wrong but I got the impression that the print
reader could transmit a string. If that is the case, that string
could be a password. If that is not possible, I think I will
hold off on buying a reader.

I just recently received a IBM ThinkPad T60 with a BIO-Metric finger reader.

It interfered with the use of a Smart Card and it was subsequently disabled and the
associated software removed.

The BIO-Metric finger reader is ONLY good for physical access to the platform it is used
with and functions associated with that platform. It is NOT a substitute for file level
protection.
