Finding and installing hotfix

-----Original Message-----
Hi,

I've found an article on the support.microsoft site regarding a problem I'm
having my computer. The article states that a hotfix is available for the
problem but doesn't show how to download it.

Any suggestions?

Page the article is on is:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;822430&Product=WinXP

Thanks,

K

.The article says to contact customer support to obtain
this fix

Yeah, tried that as well but have got a developer licence for XP so was
hoping not to have to pay them for it.

Was hoping that someone would know where they could be downloaded from.

Cheers anyways,

Read this again.

"A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended
to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to
systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive
additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this
problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows
XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product
Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit
the following Microsoft Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the
specific update in question."

This means that if you are experiencing this exact problem that you will not
be charged for the fix. You simply refer them to this article. You will not
be charged for a fix to a known bug in any MS product.

This part is germane to your situation:

<snip>

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem.

<\snip>

ie if you need the patch you won't have to pay for support (just don't ask
about anything else, because that you will be charged for).

Yes, but, as I said, support isn't free if you've got a developer licence.
You can't even submit the support request. You just get the message:

"Products purchased under a Microsoft Developer Network Licence Agreement
are not eligible for no-charge support. Free support requests are available
to MSDN subscribers by subscription level."

That's why I was trying to find alternate solutions.

Can just hope that the fix will appear soon in an update.

Thanks for the advice though,

Kev

You need to phone Microsoft using the phone number found under "It was purchased
separately" wizard (even if it is a developer license).

As the article states, you need to call Microsoft Product Support Services to
obtain it (outside the US, customers should contact their local Microsoft
subsidiary.). The support call will be be free as long as you refer to the
Knowledge Base Article number (KB822430) and ask for nothing more.

You will need to find the phone number from here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS

For WinXP:

In the wizard, Select WinXP, and Basic, and then "It was purchased separately"

For USA, you end up here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;Prodoffer31

Use phone number 425-635-3311

Can just hope that the fix will appear soon in an update.

I would think that would be in Service Pack 2 for WinXP...
