Find out who has shared file locked - how

I'm using an XP Pro PC joined to a domain.

I publish some shared files in a shared folder on one of the servers.

When I want to update one of the files I sometimes get a message telling me
I can't access the file because someone else is using it.

How can I find out who (which PC and / or which NT user account) is
currently accessing a file on a share on the server ?

Thanks

Dave.

Instead of trying to copy over the file, try to open the file using the
associated app, see if it comes back with a helpful:

"blah.doc is already in use by Joe Blow.
Would you like to open a read-only copy?".

Failing that, I think you'd need to go to the server to see who has it open.
What version server OS is running?

I'll give that a try next time the problem happens.

What's happening is we are using MS SourceSafe with the option to shadow the
most recent version of some files to a shared folder on the server.

So when I check in changed files to SourceSafe it automatically tries to
overwrite the file on the server.

These are mostly MS Word doc files so I guess I could try and open the file
in Word after SourceSafe has reported the error and see whether it tells me
who has the file open.
Failing that, I think you'd need to go to the server to see who has it
open.

So if I could log in to the server then how could I find out who had the
file locked ?

Thanks for your time.

It doesn't help. It might be because the files have the read-only attribute
set already. I get no clue from MS-Word when I try to open the file that
someone else has it open too. It's only when I try and overwrite the file
(e.g. using file copy in Windows Explorer) that I get the error message
telling someone else (but not who) is using the file.
