Find latest date

The answer I require is probably very simple but I have puzzled over this
for days.

I am using Excel97 and have a spreadsheet in which I have a column of dates
formatted as dd-mmm-yyyy which have been gathered from other sheets in the
workbook.

What I require is a formula to select and display at the bottom of the
column the latest date.

=MAX(A1:A1000)
