FInd files in Windows Explorer...

Hi...

How do I find, and delete, files containing certain words in Vista's Windows
Explorer?

I have this large folder structure containing thousands of folder, which
again contains many links.
Recently one link in every folder have become a dead link and needs to be
deleted.

I have tried to search for the specific files, but I seem not able to search
for a certain word inside the links.
The unwanted links all have different names, but they have a common word in
the domain name.

Advanced search don't seem to work.
Ghange the setting for the search in the folder options dialog box to
"always search in filename and content" do not work.

Is there a free software somewhere that can do this?

I'll assume that you are searching on the <C> drive or pointing to the
folder, instead of "Indexed locations only", by doing "Choose the
Location to Search* in the Location Box. And you have checked marked on
"Include non indexed hidden and Systems files". And you can't find what
you're looking for by content?

Done that... and....
No. can't find a singel file...
It seems only to look for the search word inside the shortcuts filename, and
not in the link which resides within.

I'm flabergasted...
I was able to do just this back in the days of WinXP...

Hey, I did a test. I created a file in a directory I use that has many
files I keep there.

In the file I put this link.

I wanted to find the file that had "Hidden" in it. The search found the
in the folder that I had pointed to. I also had that url above in some
posts and using the Email search tab and it found "Hidden" in the posts
that had the url.

Then I want back to the search again using the ADV Search and pointed to
the <C> drive with *Include non indexed hidden a system files* and told
it to search, and it found every stinking file that contained the word
*Hidden* in it, including the the file I had save in my test folder and
all posts that had the url above there.

I think you're using the Name (Specify Name) box when using the Adv
Search. When I used that box, it only came back with short-cuts that had
'Hidden' in its description text and looked no further.

However when I used the Search box, top right side of the screen above
the 'ADV screen', and entered 'Hidden' in that box and told it to
search, based on the other ADV Search criteria I had selected, then it
took off and found the files that contained 'Hidden' in them.

I don't know if that's your problem or not, but I didn't have the
problem finding files that contained a word in them.

This link may be of interest particularly the part about the boolean
operators that can be applied in the search criteria when searching for
content.

That's called a PEBKAC problem, the Problem Exist Between Keyboard and
Chair. <smile>

I've been fumbling around with a lot of different settings, but no fix...

I've even copied a file from a subfolder to the start folder of teh search,
but it couldn't find that one either, when searching for contents.

On the other hand there is no problem locating a fil when the word I'm
searching for is in the name of that file....

It seems to me that I simply cannot search files based on content,
whatsoever....

Must be something I do wrong... :-(

I'll go hug a tree and see if I feel better afterwards....

Try Agent Ransack. Unlike Microsoft's search tool, it works.

Yeah.. That did it right away...
There must be something wrong somewhere in my registry I guess....
