Find and Replace problems

I have a Word 2003 document, which has been modified by several people, but
suddenly, I am unable to replace text in the document. I am trying to
replace the text "in Figure" with "on Figure", and it doesn't find anything.
However, if I just do a Find for "in Figure", it finds 55 items within the
document. I haven't changed any parameters between trying to Replace, and
trying to Find, yet it's not working for Replace, but does for Find. How can
I fix this? Or why is it Finding it, but not allowing me to Replace it?
When the Find comes up with the text, the numbers of the figures are also
selected, and if I tried to Replace them, the numbers would be removed.

Since you say the figure number is also highlighted when you do the search, I
wonder if the word "Figure" and the figure number are actually in there as a
Caption. If this is the case, I'm not sure how you'd go about doing a
search/replace.

The reason you can't find the text in your document is because it doesn't
exist there. What you have is a cross reference to the Figure caption. If
you toggle the field codes (ALT+F9) you will see what I mean. You need to
search for the REF field instead eg "in ^d REF" and manually make the
change. The wildcard search function will not accept field definitions.

That doesn't make sense, though, since the Find, finds everything correctly,
only including the reference number. Why would the Find work, but the
Replace not find anything? That doesn't add up. Besides, this function used
to work in this and other documents, to find the same reference, but now it's
not, though only for the Replace.
