Find and replace in excel

when I try a find a replace, it finds everything fine, but when I try
to replace with nothing (or a blank space) it will not work, any
suggestions ?
 
"select all" im assuming you mean replace all? I do replace all, and
get this error with Excel:

"Microsoft Office Excel cannot find any data to replace. Check if your
search formatting and criteria are defined correctly. If you are sure
that matching data exists in this workbook, it may be on a protected
sheet. Excel cannot replace data on a protected worksheet."


Now I am positive it found data, it found about 1672 cells. Im not so
sure as to what a protected worksheet is, but this is the error coming
across, any ideas?
