filesharing across networks

Is it possible to connect to another computer that is on another network, in order to do filesharing?
I want to be able to transfer large files (far too large to use email attachments) between my computer and that of my brother. We both have permanent connections, with nearly static IP addresses (I have 6 weeks lease time from the DHCP).

A safe and secure way to do that across the public internet is via a VPN tunnel. XP (Pro and Home)
can act as a VPN server. See these links for further details on how to set that up on a XP box...
