files transfer problem

I used the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to backup my files to an
external HD. I would like to recover some files but not overwrite those
already in My Documents. Is there a way to only extract my xls or doc files?
I am using XP Pro.

You could copy/move them.

Start > Search > enter *.xls > define the drive(s) or folder(s)

Once the search has completed send to, or copy to?

In times gone by the usefulness of DOS in these tasks was really very,
very good.

A simple *.bat file of 600 bytes used to do exactly what you seem to
require. I don't really know if DOS retains it's effectiveness in this
new environment
