hi there,
I recently purchased a MP3 player. Removable drive's system property shows
that about 1GB is full and that I still have another 1gb of disk space
remaining in the player. But I cannot see the songs in my windows
explorer. All that I can see are three folders, which look like some system
folders but none of them contain any song.
I am using xp pro sp2.

any help would be appreciated.

on the MP3 player itself do you have an option to format the drive?
this seems to be corrupted (note: formating will wipe out all data on
the MP3 player including the songs)

Some players use proprietary formats for file storage. You haven't given any
info to identify your player or the file system used so it is hard to be
specific about your machine.

So I'll tell you about another one- see how it works and then look at your
player. iRiver iFP standard format- needs a program for iRiver to see and
transfer the files because it is not a standard DOS/Windows format. Using
the iRiver manager program it sees the files, lets you transfer, delete,
move the music files as needed- but the manager program *must* be used. They
are not seen in Windows Explorer. It is the way the way the file system
works. It is not a standard windows format so can't be, and never ever will
be seen using Windows explorer. This sounds as if it may be the same for
your (unnamed) player.

iRiver offer an alternative. The player can be formatted as a FAT filing
system using the UMS optional firmware update so the player is seen as
another drive when connected- but you can't then use the iRiver manager
program. iRiver offer a different version of their firmware that must be
flashed to the player to make the change. It is not just a setting you
alter, or a straight forward format.

Not all makers offer an alternative like iRiver does. The iRiver also offers
the option of using wmf format- the files are around half of the size of the
equivalent mp3 at the same quality- not all players offer that option
either.

You need to find out what your (unnamed) player uses. They will have a
website- look on there. Read your manual.

Different makes use different systems. Yours may not offer the ability or
option of being read through the Windows Explorer. It's really the kind of
thing you should research before buying if you need that ability.

(I don't know the capabilities or options for all makes/models of mp3
players so to get information you really should give the make and model-
perhaps someone here may know about it- but that is why the good makers have
websites with help, firmware updates etc. Try their website.)

I hope that is clear- good luck.

(btw iRiver are a one of the better makes- they even have updates and
improvement releases. The UMS driver has advanced to v1.85 in late 2005, and
the first one I had tried was v1.11 in early 2003. That is support that
justifies recommendation of iRiver for the continued support, I doubt all
makers would offer updates for so long after a model release, if they offer
them at all.)
