Files get compressed randomly!

Without any action on my part files on my hard drive are getting randomly
compressed. About 1/2 of my files are shown in blue as compressed.

I uncompress them and soon they're listed in the directory in blue, to show
that they are compressed again. I'm using XP Pro and both partitions on my
hard drive files are affected. Could this be a virus? I'm using the latest
Norton Anti-Virus.

Is this an unheard of problem with no imaginable solution?

Take a close look at your running processes, identify and understand the
purpose of each of the processes to make sure that no malware is on your
computer. Did you by any chance schedule disk cleanups that might be
doing compression at the same time? Maybe you use a "tweaking" program
of sorts that might do this?

Have run Disk Cleanup recently? Disk Cleanup has an option to Compress Old
Files.

Compress Old Files
[[Windows can compress files that you have not used recently. Compressing
files saves disk space, but you can still use the files. No files are
deleted. Because files are compressed at different rates, the displayed
amount of disk space that you will gain is approximate. An Options button
permits you to specify the number of days to wait before Disk Cleanup
compresses an unused file.]]
