Well, RTF should open just fine with WordPad and PPS will open with
PowerPoint. What happens if you change the extension (on one that you know
what type of file it was) to the proper type? If it works, and it *should*,
then you are going to end up manually going through and changing them all.
Make sure that it's the file extension that's actually changed and not the
association:

Disable the hiding of extensions for known file types in case that's not
already done.
