files are not saving

L

Lois

I am not sure if this is the correct group for this
question. Students have their own file folders on our
Win 2003 server. They have Full Control of their folders.
The PowerPoint 2002 they are using on a WinXP machine.
When saving their ppt files to their server folder the
file disappears. There is no error or warning. Also,
the file is not in the list of most recent documents. It
is as though they never did the ppt.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Does this happen when they use other programs to create files, including
Microsoft Office programs (like Word) and non-Microsoft Office programs
(like PhotoShop or even NotePad), or does it just happen with PowerPoint?

To avoid corrupt files (although not completely missing files) it is
generally recommended to save to the hard drive and then copy the files
to the network.

Thanks for your response. It has only been reported during PPT use. These
computers are in the High School media center and get used quite a bit for
all different projects. It is wierd because some kids have no problem and
others do. All access rights are the same. All updates are also the same.
I just don't see any reason why this should happen including the file missing
from "recent documents".

I know that this is sacreligious to suggest, but could it be an easy way to be
granted more time for the assignment?

No they aren't using it as an excuse, but I had to laugh when I read your
comment! The head media specialist is working with them. She is the one who
brought this to my attention. They had to redo everything they did last
Thurs. I also searched my entire server thinking they may have "dropped" the
file elsewhere. All those ppt slides are lost in cyber space somewhere.

I addition to searching the server, has anyone searched their systems for the
files? Also check Tools > Options > Save. What do they have set for "Save
PowerPoint files as:" and "Default file location:"?

I have already checked all that. Nothing seems to be incorrect. This is the
craziest problem we have had in a while.
