files and transfer wizard question

I have an old windows Millenenium (pc1), I purchased a new xp professional
(pc2) and am attempting to transfer my existing information from the pc1 to
pc2. Pc1 is FAT32 and Pc2 is NTFS. Can I use the files and transfer wizard
with a direct crossover ethernet cable connection.Considering they are
different formats, what kind of behaviour can I expect? If the transfer is
possible, what will the default file permissions be set to? Also before
attempting this,is there a way to fully backup pc1 , I do not see any backup
utility for me to use. Any imput humbly appreciated. Thank you.

Windows XP can read FAT32 partitions fine. FAT32 can't read NTFS. However
this is a mote point in your case as your files are not FAT or NTFS. Those
designations are referring the 'file system', or the way files are stored,
not the files themselves. Once the files are on an NTFS system they will
have NTFS default permissions.

You should be made aware that the Backup program that comes with XP (found
in Accessories->System Tools) cannot recognize the .QIC backup format that
the Windows Me Backup program creates. Truly a PITA. If you have created any
backups this way you need to use a third party app to restore the data.
Fortunately there is a 30 day trialware version of Backup MyPC that will
install on XP and will open and restore .QIC files. You can get it here
http://www.stompsoft.com/downloads.html (take version 5 not 6 as that is
only an update)

You need a third party imaging program if you want to fully backup the data
on your Windows Me setup. Personally I use Acronis TrueImage for this but
there are many other apps including BootIt NG that do a fine job. another
option that you may not have thought about is to simply remove the drive
from the Windows Me system, switch the jumper to the "Slave" position and
connect the drive to your XP system as a slave device. XP will be able to
read the data on it even though it is formatted as FAT32.

Yes. The fact that the drives use different file systems is
completely irrelevant. It's only the data that is transferred
over the network, without the files' underlying file structures.

Realize that every time you download a file over the internet
(which is also just transferring a file across a network) you
don't even realize what kind of computer is on the other end, let
alone what file system it's using, and it doesn't matter. What
you want to do here is no different.

I should have mentioned that Backup MyPC will install on either Windows XP
and/or Windows Me and will enable you to do a full system backup.
