Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

When I start this wizard on my new computer, on the second screen it provides
4 choices, "1) I want to create a wizard disk in the following drive 2) I
already have a Wizard disk 3) I will use the Wizard from the Windows XP CD 4)
I don't need a Wizard disk, I've already collected my files from my old
computer." We want to use the first option, create a Wizard disk but that
option isn't highlighted/available to use; our system did not come with an XP
CD or a Wizard CD; it does have a CD burner but when we insert a CD into the
burner, nothing happens. Any ideas how to get around this problem? We also
tried storing all the old computer data on an external hard drive and tried
using option 4; the message we got was "the location you specified does not
contain stored information; please type a valid folder path into the edit
box." Now what?

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop and name it.
2. Open XP's Files and Setting Transfer Wizard.
3. Select "Old Computer"
4. Select "Other" and Browse to the Desktop folder you created.
5. The Wizard will create a file in the folder. The file is named
"USMT2.UNC"
6. Record the "USMT2.UNC" file to a CD, DVD or another partition.
7. After you have reinstalled XP and your programs, open the
Files & Settings Transfer Wizard and select "New Computer".
8. Select "I don't need the Wizard Disk......"
9. Browse to your CD Drive and insert the CD containing the
"USMT2.UNC" file or browse to the partition storing the file.
10. Your Files and Settings will begin installing on the new drive.

Note:

The .DAT file within the USMT2.UNC folder should be named IMG00001.DAT
There should also be a file named "status". If you have these two files within
the USMT2.UNC folder, you should only browse to the "USMT2.UNC" folder
when using the wizard.

==> Make sure your IMG00001 file is properly named: IMG00001.DAT

You need to browse to the location of the "USMT2.UNC" folder. Do not browse
to or select the IMG00001.DAT file, only the USMT2.UNC folder itself.

For example, my location is: C:\Old Computer Files\Transfers\USMT2.UNC

First off, in order to use the first option you would need to
have a floppy drive, a zip drive or a USB flash drive (not an
external hard drive) attached to your new computer. The FAST
wizard will not place the files you need to take to your old
computer on a hard drive or a CD.

OK, so where does that leave you. If you're determined to use
the FAST wizard to migrate your files you have two options;
1. Borrow an XP installation CD just for this procedure
2. Somehow acquire one of the 3 types of drives I mentioned
earlier, floppy, zip or USB flash.
Getting a USB flash drive would be the best option. They're
relatively inexpensive (128 MB for less than $20) and there's
no installation involved, you just plug it in.

Once you've got the flash drive plugged in, option 1 will be
available. You can run the FAST wizard and it will place two
files, fastwiz.exe and migwiz.cab, on the drive. You then take
the drive to your old computer, run fastwiz.exe and collect
your files into a convenient location. You should end up with a
folder on the old computer named USMT2.UNC. Within that folder
will be two files, IMG00001.DAT and status. You can copy this
folder to a CD or transfer via a network to your new computer.
