Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

Hello

I've now experienced this problem on several computers, so condolences to
anyone finding this.

The item "K893644" mentioned is not amenable to search on Microsoft support,
although since Mathlete wrongly suggested "Add Remove Hardware " which is
manifestly wrong (it should be Add Remove Programs) perhaps his reference is
wrong as well.

The KB article which would seem to be appropriate to this issue
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312965/en-us) is full of so much gobbily
gook that I can understand why someone would consider suicide while trying to
use FAST or FSTW (some of the gobbily gook).

Bottom line -- this is a real mess.

Since no MVP has stepped into this mess again, I think we must infer that
this is an intractible problem.

Hi
My F&TW did its thing, right to the end, and then said that the version of
XP on my old PC was older than that on my new one (you dont say! isnt that
why we're using it in the first place!?) Anyway "About Windows" said they
were both the same 5.1 SP2... so now I'm really confused. Then read this
post about copying the usmt folder.. (even that was a bit fraught... it
obviously wasnt keen on me doing it... said I could not rename as the file
was in use... though the wizard was closed - I even tried rebooting and it
still said it was in use, but I persevered, trying a 'copy' over the existing
having made a duplicate elsewhere, and again it said 'file in use' but it had
obviously copied some of the files across from the usmt directory. Anyway,
re-ran the wizard and it worked!
So thank you David C!
cheers
Mark

You have saved my bacon too, thanks - but you gave some duff info. The
download is KB896344 not as you describe. It works for me.

I have the same problem and found the fix (KB896344) but I am unable to
install it. When I try, I get a Set up error which says "Failed to migrate
dependent packages". Now who can solve that one so that I can solve the
transfer problem?

Ok, I just used the wizard to back up my settings. Then reformated. When I
booted back into windows, I got this same error. I went to the windows
update site and re-installed all the undates that I had the first time.
During this I noticed a patch in the Software, Optional talking about this
settings and file transfer wizard and 32 vs 64 bit systems. After installing
this update, like I had on my old setup, I was ABLE TO GET ME SETTINGS
TRANSFERED.

You just need to point it to the directory where the folder USMT2.UNC is.
Don't point it at the folder, just to the directory where that folder is
located. So for me it was F:\USMT2.UNC..... So I pointed it to the F:\
and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.

Also, microsoft gurus. You might look into this K#### patch which talks
about this and find out why it seems to make a difference. I kept seeing you
guys telling people how to run the wizard, even when everyone was saying they
were. Its all cause of that patch. Trust me, all I did was update all the
patches and I was able to do it.

Mark, I totally agree with you....This transfer wizard has also cost me all
of my files and settings!!!! Luckily for me, the disk that I saved my wives
settings on loaded ok so it's just bad, rather than horrendous. My advice is
back it up manually, or be prepared to lose years of hard work! Cheers

files and settings wizard help

The problems seems to be the Hotfix KB896344. I do have it on the target computer and not on the source (old) computer. It was not available on the Microsoft Update page. I downloaded and installed on source computer but it doesnt show up in add/remove programs.
I considered that I would remove KB896344 from the target computer but I get a warning that other programs and updates may not work properly.

Your help is greatly appreciated

I was having the same problems as many other posters. I had made a backup
form my old computer using the file and settings transfer wizard. When I
tried to open the backup file (USMT2.UNC) on my new computer (I had saved the
USMT2.UNC file to an external drive) I received the error saying it could
notfind the backup file. I installed the plug-in (KB896344) and it found the
folder when I pointed it to my drive which contained the USMT2.UNC. As others
have posted You have to point it only to the drive or disk which contains the
backup, not the folder (ex: F:\).
I hope this helps someone and I would not use windows to backup files again.
I would use a third party software like Roxio or Nero.

I just got stuck in the same situation. Horrified. Our company backs up all
of our corporate stuff and each of our "My Documents", but I didn't realize
some of these payroll folders on our HR clerks weren't being backed up. When
I ran Files and Settings Transfer, I stored it on a second drive. Then
reformatted her drive. When I wanted to restore, the same story as you.
After searching on the web, I downloaded KB896344. After I rebooted, it
restored the dat file on my second drive. I sure hope you find the solution
for you dat file.

I spent hours trying to figure out a similar problem and luckily ran across
this website that fixed my problem. They have three different things to check
and mine was the third one which involved Migwiz.exe files that were
different on both computers. I updated the old one to the new version and
bam, works like a charm. Here is the website:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fast.htm
Hope this helps!!

Hi to all just adding my comments

I have used F+STW for years as I upgrade, build, rebuild and reload PCs. I
do not trust it as I have had problems with it so I always back up my files
to disk anyway.

I HAVE FOUND;

It's the speed of the re install.
I set a folder on the desktop and run the collection wizard to store into
it. I then copy this folder across my network to another PC. If I use an
external drive (as the old drive was full I just plug this into a second PC
on the network.) It seems faster to colect first to a folder and then copy
that to a second pc.
I then rebuild the offending pc.

I install the KB896344 patch and all updates on the new or rebuilt pc.

I then run the install side of transfer wizard but use the folder
"USMT2.UNC" located on my network so that the network slows the file
transfere rate down to 100mbps.

Having used the F+STW for years it is the only way that works for me as many
times the USMT2.UNC is to large for a CD or DVD. and again I think if you use
your network to slow the reload down you will have better luck with it.

And back up your files to disk just use the F+STW as an easy solution.

Terrific advice Rodeo! I had the same problem, and installing the patch
fixed it for me.
Micrsoft should emphasize this more.

I had the same problem attempting to install from another drive. I
transfered the file to my desktop and it worked from there.

i am 3 years later on this topic, but this post helped me out! i spent hour
after hour after hour following all other posts and going back and taking sp2
and this patch off and having a totally clean install helped me get my files
back!

What if I ran FSTW on my PC running XP, which was updated through SP2, then
reformatted and updated through SP3? I get a message that it doesn't
recognize my file USMT2.UNC. Do I need to rebuild again, but stop after
loading updates through SP2, run FSTW to get my data loaded, then continue
with the remainder of the updates? THX!

Try using an SP2 Windows XP CD to run F.A.S.T. from.

In fact - if you are going to use the F.A.S.T. Wizard - I'd recommend always
doing it from the Windows XP installation media - the same media on both
systems - so that you are using the same version of the wizard on both
systems.

I believe the CD that I have is the original release of XP, so I do not have
a CD at SP2. I was able to load updates to the original version of XP up to
SP2, before my system became problematic. I ran F.A.S.T. from my PC at this
point. I did try to run F.A.S.T. from my CD but it still would not
recognize my data file (UNC).
Therefore, do I need to reload my system again and stop after updating with
SP2 and then try to reload my data files?

Thanks for the help to date. I reloaded my XP again and downloaded/installed
SP2. F.A.S.T. started and appears to be running, but it has been 6 hours and
I have not been able to perceive any movement in the progress bar for the
past ~4 hours. The file (USMT2.UNC) is 20.5 GB, so I expect this to take
some time, but is there any way that I can tell if it is still working or
stuck? I've looked at the task manager, and according to the applications
window F.A.S.T. is running, but the primary process is System Idle Process
(97%), the the following processes consume the remainder of the CPU usage
intermittently: migwig (2-3%) lsass.exe, msmsgs.exe, syshost.exe, svchost.exe
