Filenames in Blue vs Black

Cindy

Can anyone tell me the significance of this and why some
filenames within the same folder are in blue text while
others are in black?

Thanks!

Hi

The files in blue are compressed ones. If any are green - they are encrypted.

Blue means they are compressed.
Open Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View tab.
The first option is: "Display compressed files and folders
with alternate color". Uncheck to see all black and check
to see both.

Go to 'My Computer' select the drive and click on Properties. There is a
checkbox that is checked that says ' compress drive to save space'. Make
sure you have enough free space and uncheck. It will ask something to the
effect of this folder and subfolders. If you want all uncompressed, select
all folders.

Greetings --

By design, WinXP compresses files that do not get used frequently,
and, if you've left the default settings intact, displays those files
in blue.

If you wish to change this behavior, in Windows Explorer, click
Tools > Folder Options > View > Advanced settings: Show encrypted or
compressed NTFS files in color.

Blue indicates that the files have been compressed using the compression
in NTFS. Common cases are the $NTUninstall. . folders of files needed
to uninstall updates

Please reply to news group.

What if I don't want XP to compress unused files? (with the exception
of hotfix uninstall folders)

In Disk Cleanup, uncheck "compress old files".

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
