filename restrictions? aux.gif

A strange thing happened to me the other day. I was transfering some images
that I had processed using my linux box onto my winxp machine via ftp and
the ftp program would freeze on the larger sets of files. The files were
named sequentially (base 26) starting from aaa.jpg, aab.jpg, ..., aaz.jpg,
aba.jpg, ... etc.

I was able to transfer the files, in smaller sets, until I ran into the
files that were problematic and the files that were giving me problems were
all the files named aux.jpg. When I renamed the files on the linux box to
aux_.jpg, they transfered fine. When I tried to name the back to aux.jpg in
winxp, it simply ignored it. (To rename, I would click on the file in
explorer, hit f2, rename, hit enter)

Can I not have a file named aux.jpg? Why do I have this problem?

I also tried tarring all the files together, then transfering, then using
zipgenius to extract the files and zipgenius would freeze on the aux.jpg
files at well.

The aux_.jpg files are perfectly viewable and were simply part of a batch
process, to all files should be equal.

AUX is a reserved name. Other examples are PRN, LPT1 and CON.

Certain names are 'reserved' from way back in history (DOS) as referring
to items of hardware. AUX CON (the console - ie keyboard and monitor)
COM (ports) PRN and LPT
And for reasons that are less clear, these are not allowed as subfields,
between periods, in filenames either
