file type gets modified when dowloaded

On my XP Pro laptop (SP2), when I download a file for a UNIX platform XP
saves it as xxxx.tar.tar This file is then not usable on the SUN workstation
it is destined for.

Yet, when I download the same file from the same site using either w2000 or
W'98SE the file comes down as xxxx.tar.gz and the SUN workstation can unzip
it and read it without error.

Is this a setting within IE or something in XP Pro?

Thanks

Not to try the simple answer, but have you just tried renaming it to the
correct file extension? ".tar.gz"

First thing, but that did not help, couln't get the workstation to recognize
it. The file was then downloaded with W'2000 and worked fine and retained the
correct extension (without any intervention when saving).

I don't know why XP is changing the file type, the GUI that opens when you
go to save the file shows the wrong extension right in the window...
