File transfer between computers

I have Windows XP Media Center edition (computer "A")
networked with 3 other computers in my home.
Computer "B" has Windows XP Home edition. Computers "C"
and "D" have windows 98. The problem is moving files
from A to B, C, or D while seated at A.

I get the following message: Error Coping File or
Folder. Cannot copy (name of file or folder): Access is
denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write
protected and that the file is not currently in use".

In order to move files from A to B, C, or D I need to be
seated at B, C, or D and retrieve them from A.

There is no problem moving files from B, C, or D to A
while seated at A

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated! Kevin

Share the disks on B, C, and D with write (full) permission. If
they're shared as read-only, you can't copy files to them from another
computer such as A.

I have a similar problem copying files between Windows
PCs. I have two PCs communicating over a Windows home
network. They are both in the same Workgroup. One
computer is running WinXP Home and the other computer is
running WinXP Pro. I have a problem copying files from
one computer to the other (primarily from the WinXP Home
PC to the WinXP Pro PC). The problem seems to mainly
involve copying certain zip files. When I try to back up
my data directory on the WinXP Home PC to my WinXP Pro
machine, the copy is aborted with the following error
message:

Error Copying File or Folder

Can not copy filename: Access denied

Make sure the disk is not full or copy protected and that
the file is not currently in use.

If I skip this file and start the copy operation again,
the copy will be aborted on another .zip file.

Not all zip files seem to have this problem, but many
do. I can not copy the file while sitting on either PC.
What could be causing this? This is very irritating and
makes backing up files very tedious.

Your problem is actually a different problem than Kevin's, and mor
insidious. I just ran into the same problem, and believe it's
"feature" (i.e.: bug!) of Windows XP.

If a zip file is made from files on a non-shared folder, they ge
marked (somehow) as non-shared. Even if you copy the zip to a share
folder, because Windows XP understands zip files, the entire zip i
considered non-shared.

I haven't yet figured out how to modify zip files that were create
from non-shared files, but I worked around it by ensuring all the file
reside on shared folders BEFORE making the zip file that includes them.

So, the (annoying) process is: 1) set the folder / director
containing the files to be zipped as "shared", 2) create the zip fro
the files, 3) reset the folder back to "non-shared". The last step i
for safety on wireless networks.

Any zip files made this way will be accessible when moved to share
folders. Conversely, any zip files that contain ANY files and/o
directories marked as non-shared WILL NOT BE ACCESSIBLE, even when tha
zip resides on a shared folder.

Could this relate to a problem I have been having with a teaching electronic
white board package that stores it's package files as renamed zip files.
These files are incredibly slow to open over the lan often ten minutes or
more?
