Hi, On several locations on my C: hard drive there are files the Windows Explorer
displays, but can't be opened - I get "You do not have permission" errors, and can't be
moved, copied, or deleted - I get "File Doesn't Exist" errors. Neither System Restore or
CHKDSK have fixed this problem. What could have caused these errors?

Thanks,
Viepia

"File doesn't exist" errors sometimes mean that there is an invalid
character in the filename, such as an extra:":". Neither System Restore or
CHKDSK can fix such errors. Sometimes alternate boot disks, such as a
Linux CD, will allow you to locate and rename the offending filename so that
Windows can delete it.

More information is needed on the "permissions" warning - this isn't
necessarily an error, but a simple rights issue. When and where do you get
this message?

Hi,

There are no bad characters in any of the file names. In addition to the NTFS files
on the hard drive this problem also affects some FAT files on a thumb drive, but not
others. Windows Explorer first showed the correct size of the thumb drive file, then a
smaller value, then 0 for the length. In all cases attempting to access the file for
opening or to change file attributes caused "Access Denied", attempted to move the file
caused "File Doesn't Exist" errors. When I moved the thumb drive back to a good PC the
file was unchanged.

This problem was probably caused by an unqualified person with administrator privileges
attempting to add several users.

The bad PC is loaded with licensed 3rd party software, they are asking for $20,000 for
a reload.

I am very unsure about what the best next step should be.

Thanks,
Viepia

A step might be to clone the disk, set the original aside, and try to fix
the permissions issues on the clone. That at least won't make the problem
on the original drive any worse.

Given the amount that the 3rd party wants, the $100 or so that the drive
will cost is probably safe.
