Any ideas as to what would cause an Access database to increase its size by
ten times? We have a 3rd party app. running Access (2000, I believe) that
was 70 Mb., but a week after a data entry clerk was working on it it's now
700 Mb. Can I go ahead and compact it, or is there something more serious
going on?

Make a copy first, then go ahead and compact it. Chances are there was a
very large input which had indexes, causing the database to bloat. Bloating
that much is rather unusual though.
