You may be using the option to save as 97-2003 and 5/95.
This creates two essentially separate workbooks of different formats
within the one file. Bill Manville describes this better than you would

Possibly you turned on highlight changes (tracking updates), which also causes other
problems like not being able to update macros in a shared workbook. I would
