file sharing

D

Dan

Configuration: DSL modem connected to Linksys router, connected to two
wireless nodes. Two wireless laptops running XP Home, one desktop running
XP Pro.

All the computers access the internet properly.

The two laptops see each other and can access the others files and map its
folders. Neither one can ping the others address.

The two laptops list the desktop in Network Neighborhood but wont display
the shared folders. When asked, they display "Cant find the network" or
"Access is denied. You may not have permission".

The desktop cant see the laptops.

I have followed the endless procedures in a dozen of the relevant KB
articles which have helped but didnt solve this issue.

This happened after running WindowsXP Repair. It doesn't change when I
eliminate antivirus and firewall programs.

Folders are shared, network wizard was run, Netbeui is enabled, browser
service is running, firewall is off, guest account is active.

Does anyone have any clues as to what I may try next?

Thanks

Dan,

Are you using a properly setup (activated, and password synchronised) account on
all computers?

Check the registry setting restrictanonymous on the server (desktop).
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

If all else fails, run "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from all 3
computers, and post the output here. Read this article for instructions:

I had a similar issue (posted a few weeks ago). I resolved it by uninstalling
SP2 and then reinstalling it. I went through a long process (with Chuck help
- thanks Chuck) and was preparing to reinstall when I discovered this
solution (I still dont know exactly where the problem lay)

Here is 2 computers. The other one will be in the next message.

As far as I can tell all is OK except that it doesn't work.

Where are the Security Policies in the registry? Obviously, since I couldnt
find them, I didnt check them.

One laptop is SP2 as is the desktop. One laptop (#2) is SP1.

Dan,

The security policy that I referred to, restrictanonymous, should be explained
in this article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

Here's one problem.

danssony05:
Status for domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\Nbf_NdisWanNbfIn{D49630CA-367D-4709-9A3C-BBFC9B6B5152}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.

Danssony05 has NetBEUI. Danslap and Dansdesk04 don't. You don't need NetBEUI,
so get rid of it.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>

If that doesn't solve your problems, post updated "ipconfig /all" logs, and
we'll diagnose further.

This happened after running Windows XP Repair. I can't uninstal SP2 because
it came preinstalled on XP.

Seems as if this type of problem has become more common since SP2 though.

I did find restrictanonymous but I was also looking for accessdenied and
everyone (or something like that) mentioned in another one of your papers.

NetBeui is installed on all three machines and shows with a check mark in
the connection properties.

I certainly appreciate your help.

Dan,

Huh. Look at the 3 browstat logs. Is the above entry from Danssony05 visible
in the others? Do you need NetBEUI anyway? Read the linked articles from here:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>

I'm not sure which reference you are looking for, but most of the detail about
"access denied" should be in one of these:

Dan,

Computers are like people - some take more time and energy than others. Sorry
you ran out of patience, there is yet much to do.

You know where we are, come back when you have more time.
