I have posted here before and must say that so far, 100% of my questions have
been answered succesfully. I have faith that average will continue.

My Question:
I have just setup a router with wired connection and the 2 pc's connected to
router run on Win2k (Windows 2000). ! of the 2 appears in the network
neighborhood of 1 pc (obviously appearing on its own network neighborhood)
however pc number 2 appears NEITHER in its network neighborhood nor in pc
#1's neighborhood. The two can ping each other no prob but I cannot make
pc#2's name appear in any neighborhood. I have tried reinstalling TCP/IP,
renaming the workgroup name and searching GOOGLE for file sharing info, but I
have been unsuccesful.

HELP!

Hi,
Unfortunately, neither your response nor the link really helped.
This would apply to the more standard situation whereby things WERE working
well, however, all things NOT being equal, that is, things NOT working as
they should, I would need more help.

I appreciate your assistance however.

Anyone else?

Hi,
The two can ping each other no prob but I cannot make
pc#2’s name appear in any neighborhood.

This is a Computer Browser issue. I have it all the time.
Unfortunately when there is no Server involved, each machine thinks it
is the Master Browser holding the browse list and things get into
conflict. I would disable the Computer Browser service on one machine
and then restart it on the other. If all fails, you can also use
LMHosts file or a Hosts file to fix. Forcing NetBIOS over TCP/IP to
enable will also be important as it is NetBios that does the browse
list.

Hi Lara,
Finally someone who knows what I am talking about. Ok ummm, how do I
deactivate or diable the "browser service" on one of the 2 pc's? I figured
I'd do it on the second pc which is used less often than the 1st.

I await your response.

Thanks,

AL

Hi,
how do I deactivate or diable the "browser service" on one of the 2
pc’s?

You go to Administrative Tools - Services - Computer Browser Service -
set to Manual.

If you want to view the Admin Tools you have to go into the Taskbar
properties (right click-properties) Start Menu Tab-Customize Advanced
Tab - scroll down until you see show admin tools.

If that doesn’t work, you can use the LMHosts file. Just do a search
on your machines for LMHosts . Edit the file with Notepad.

Read the directions and then underneath without the # add the IP of
your machines and the NetBios Name. Do on both machines.

Eg.

192.168.1.1 mycomp
192.168.1.2 myothercomp

Cheers,

Lara
