File sharing XP Home to Win 2K

I am using a Netgear DG834G Wireless router to network
two home PCs plus give a shared internet broadband
connection.

The internet connection works fine but I am unable to
share files between the two PCs, although I can see the
shared file enabled folders from each PC to the other.
It must be something to do with permissions and I have
tried to follow the MS troubleshooter guide but it is
confusing (mixing XP home / professional features and not
providing much on the Win 2k front).

One PC is running XP Home and the other 2000 professional.

A step by step guide for each of the O/Ss would be great -
where could I get this?

Thanks

On the XP machine, make sure Internet Connection Firewall
is disabled on the Local Area Connection. Click Start ->
right click on My Network Places -> left click on
Properties -> right click on Local Area Connection ->
left click on Properties -> click on the Advanced tab ->
uncheck the box under Internet Connection Firewall if it
is checked -> click OK. Try now to access the shares on
each machine from the other. I've found ICF to be a big
hinderance to file & printer sharing among other
problems. If you're concerned about turning off ICF don't
be. NAT in your router does a better job than ICF.

Thanks but the ICF is turned off and has been throughout
but still can't access the files. Do you have any other
ideas please?

You can see the shared folders from each PC. How are you trying to
access them? What exactly happens when you do it? If there's an
error message, what does it say?

Here are some general tips for networking XP with 2000 Pro:

1. Create matching user accounts on both computers: same user name and
password.

2. Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP to fully enable file sharing.
Tell it that the computer connects to the Internet through a
residential gateway (router).
