file-sharing troubles xp pro <--> xp home

We have a wireless network in our home that's been working for years. It
comprises three machines, two running XP Home and one running XP Pro.
All share files with each other. Recently, one of the XP Home machines
can no longer share with the XP Pro machine. One can open the list of
shared files on the Home machine, but when you try to explore a folder
or open a file on the Pro machine an error pops up claiming the Home
machine has insufficient privileges. It also proclaims that there is
insufficient storage on the server (Pro) to complete the request. On
just one of the two XP Home machines (the one I'm having trouble with),
attempting to access something in the Net Neighborhood pops open a
window asking for a password for the Guest ID on the Pro machine. Even
supplying the correct password fails to get things going.

I have found information about altering the lanman paramaters on the Pro
machine to increas the value of IRPStackSize. I have done that, but the
error persists. This client machine can share successfully with the
other Home system, and both that other system and the Pro system can
see/open files and folders on the Home machine that gives the error. The
Pro machine is configured for "Simple File Sharing."

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Did you make sure the computers are in the same workgroup ex. MSHOME is the
default setting for XP computers.

They are. I changed from the default name ages ago. The fact that the
Pro machine can read from the Home machine, but not vice versa, is
what's giving me fits. The other Home machine deals with the other two
--Pro & Home--with no trouble whatsoever...

...and (I forgot) the Home machine giving trouble has no trouble with the
other Home system...

did you recently install or change any settings to the network, xp pro PC, or
the troublesome Home PC? If nothing than maybe a setting was changed somehow
on the home PC to where it's only sharing with the other home PC. I dont have
windows home edition so i don't know where to change that at if possible. if
all fails try changing all the computers to a new workgroup name.

I haven't made any changes for long time. Funny thing is, the Pro
machine can read (and write) files on the troublesome Home machine, but
not the other way around. Both Home machines share just fine with each
other, and the non-troublesome Home system is also fine both directions
with the Pro system...

Well i would give some of the things i listed above a try if nothing works,
then i'm fresh out of ideas. that kind of problem is really odd. I dont know
what could be causing it. I wish you the best of luck in solving your problem.

Try creating an ID/Pass on the Pro, identical to the one in use on the
troublesome Home machine. The Pro May have disabled "simple file sharing"
(and happens to have an ID/Pass like the other Home)

I've already done that - a long time ago. I found that I had to have
matching ID's and passwords on both machines. I also checked "simple
file sharing," and it's enabled.... This gets weirder and weirder. I
wonder if there's a Group Policy hiding somewhere that's behind this.

I think I've tried them all except ripping out all the networking
everywhere and setting it up again. That's a last resort, because I
don't want to break what's working.
