I have 2 PC's networked and cannot get one of them to file
share with the other. One is a desktop with XP Home which
also has an ISDN connection which shares OK with the other
PC which is a Laptop running XP Pro. Internet sharing is fine.
It is the laptop which can't see the desktop, the error
message I get is "desktop PC is not accessible. You might
not have permission to view this network resource". I have
tried without the XP firewall, pinged both computers
sucessfully and run event viewr in which the only errors
being reported were occasional "error=IPNATHLP"

Thanks in advance
regards, Nigel

Nigel,

On the XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS properly set.

With XP Pro, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure
that the Guest account is enabled, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc"), and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers. If
"Classic", setup and use a common non-Guest account, with identical, non-blank,
password on all computers.

For XP Home, OR for XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled (for XP Pro, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc")), on each computer.

Making file sharing work between an XP Home and XP Pro computer is tricky - but
it can be done. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work the first time. Keep
posting here until you get it working.

Cheers,
Chuck
