I have worked on this prolbem for weeks with no success. This is the
situation.
I have two laptops running Windows XP Professional service pack 2.
I have "simple file sharing" set on in both computers.
I have the "C" drive selected for Network sharing in both computers.
I have checked "Allow network users to change my files" in both computers
I can see and I can access the C drives on both computers
I can see each others all files and folders on both computers
I can access all files and folders on ONE computer but can only access some
files and folders on the other computer
When access isn't successful I get the following message:

File xxx is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator. Access is denied.

In some instances when I doubleclick the file on the other computer,
Microsoft Word opens but the file doesn't open. It says access is denied.

I cannot build a pattern. It is quite random. Please help

Toni,

The "access denied" error can come from so many problems. One of the most
common would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other
security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be
the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

If I recall correctly, you can not enable the sharing of the My Documents
folder contents at C:\Documents & Settings\YOUR NAME\My Documents. You have
to put anything you want access to outside that directory path.

Yes, it's likely this is an issue with filesystem-rights, not
network-sharing.

In any case it's unwise to share the C: drive in-toto, as that exposes the
computer's Windows folder to attack from another (infected or compromised)
machine.

Cretae a folder to share, and assign user-rights to the share itself. Leave
the filesystem-rights as they are, since it's a new folder there should be
no restrictions anyway.

Thanks Gentlemen. With your help I did discover a pattern. This occurs only
with files and folders in My Documents. I have shared the entire C Drive on
the computer I can't access (which I will remove) AND the My Documents
Folder. I probably didn't need to share the My Documents folder if I shered
the entire C Drive. I will play with it when I get home from work this
evening.
