I have a networking problem. Three computers, two desktops, one laptop. All
were working fine sharing files, connected via a router from modem for Cox
Cable. Worked just fine. Two weeks ago lost ability to connect to the laptop,
and then finally the second work station. I experienced problem this week
connecting to Cox Cable. After much work, replaced the router. I can now
reach the Internet on each machine. However, no ability to connect to each
of the desktops or laptop, from any of the machines. Went to Help and read
instruction for File Sharing on Windows XP (Windows Aarticle ID 304040 (How
to configure file sharing in Windows XP) with the following result:

Following instructions under "Turning on and turning off Simple File
Sharing" above (including viewing the video instruction), the "Use Simple
File Sharing (Recommended)" check box command is missing (Windows XP, SP2)
from the view menue. How do I restore this command? I hesitate to "restore
defaults" until I know more; will that do it? Thank you.

Joe,

Are your computers running XP Home or Pro? Simple File Sharing isn't an option
in XP Home.

What is the router make and model? What make and model did you replace?

When you say "lost ability to connect", what was happening? Could you not see
the computers in Network Neighborhood? Or could you see them, but get an error
(and the complete and unedited error may be very useful here) when trying to
connect?

Let's look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a
start. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely:

Are these machines running XP Pro or Home? Simple File Sharing will not be
shown as on option on XP Home since it is the only sharing method available.
Can you ping the computers from each other?

Thank you for your response.

I replaced a D-Link, model DI604 with the same brand and model, based on the
store's recommendation.

I had experienced infrequent inability to gain Internet access and through
process of elimination determined the problem was a probable faulty router.
I believe it was faulty, and probably had a short in it.

"lost ablility to connect" means the shortcut icons were present but
clicking same produced message, i.e. The drive or newtwork connection that
the "shortcut to WKS2 moved files.lnk" refers to is unavialable. Make sure
that the disk is propertly inserted or the newtwork resource is available,
and then try again. The shortcuts I used are on each computer. The same
results if I try to access through My Network Places, just faster to use the
shortcuts (when it works that is).

I have three machines, a Windows 98 SE desktop (secondary use, WKS 1),
laptop (WKS 3) with Windows 2000 and my primary workstation (WKS 2) with
Windows XP Home (oh, on your answer).

Yes, I can "see" the other computers on My Network Places on WKS 2 (XP) and
Network Neighborhood on WKS 1 (W-98).

I will now read the article you so kindly provided.
Thank you.

I will copy my reply to the other reply to my message in answer to your
question

Thank you for your response.

I don't recall how to ping, will research it and try it.
