file share. printer sharing does not work xp to xp

Have xp professional laptop and xp hom

Trying to make printer share work and file share.

Have tried the installation per microsoft procedures.

my network places - view workgroup computers shows both
computers on workgroup.

shared documents do not show up on the other computer

I assigned the printer to be shared in one computer and
loaded the software in the other computer. They both
show up as individual printers.

How do I get the printers and foders shared?
