file search slow or not responding to local or LAN

Problem, XP SP1 Dell WS630.
Since day 1 this machine has been slow to search the LAN
or local drives. If I do 2 searchs simultaneously the
search is secounds as apposed too 1 search of minutes. Now
after installing a third party file search software and
then uninstalling it, the windows native search can take
up to 30 min. or longer, which normally takes 3 sec. ANy
one come accross anything similar? Or any ideas?

What kind of NIC? You may want to replace it and also check the cabling.
